Antioch is taking significant steps to address affordable housing and support its unhoused residents through various initiatives and projects.
City Council Considers Public Financing for Low-Income Housing
The Antioch City Council is set to hold public hearings to discuss approving conduit financing bonds for three low-income apartment projects. This move aims to provide more affordable housing options for residents and is a crucial step in addressing the city’s housing needs. The council will also deliberate on staff contracts, lawsuits, and appointments to the new General Plan Advisory Committee during the upcoming meeting.
Progress on Homekey+ Program
In early March, Councilmember Tamisha Torres-Walker announced that the Antioch Inn & Suites, formerly the Comfort Inn at 2436 Mahogany Way, will serve as the new Homekey+ location. This program is designed to provide permanent housing for vulnerable residents. The city is finalizing its application for the Homekey+ program, which could bring $34.9 million in state funding to support the development of permanent supportive housing for individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
Antioch has the highest population of unhoused residents in Contra Costa County. The city is actively working to implement long-term solutions to this issue. Councilmember Torres-Walker emphasized the importance of utilizing available resources to improve the quality of life for all residents, stating, “No more excuses; it is time to start bringing people in off the streets so that businesses can thrive and our most vulnerable residents can have the kind of quality of life they deserve.”
